Overview

Judith Zimmer became interested in positive birth experiences because she almost didn’t have one. When pregnant, she switched from a high-tech obstetrician to a midwife at month seven because she wanted an unmedicated birth, if at all possible. Eighteen other women relay their own birth experiences, including a home birth and an underwater birth, as well as stories from women who had helpful epidurals and c-sections that were the best choice for their babies. Despite their differences, these women had in common that they all participated in the decision-making process during delivery. The book includes a section with advice for pregnant women who want to put the pieces in place so that they too can have a satisfying birth.

Praise

“An exquisitely balanced view of the various scenarios that occur in childbirth. Women would benefit greatly by using this as a primer for pregnancy preparation and planning.”
—Pat Burkhart, Associate Professor and Coordinator, Nurse-Midwifery Program, New York University, Clinical Director, Elizabeth Seton Childbearing Center
