“Max’s Mom Goes to Camp”

A woman visits her son, a camp counselor, and realizes she needs to step back so he can step forward.

Every mile of the drive from West 22nd Street to Hancock had felt right. How good it was to say the words to anyone who crossed her path that morning, “I’m going to visit my son.” In her mind, she and Max were one big family, even though now it was just the two of them. Hers was a life wiped out by divorce. It was a miracle really that she’d even had Max in the first place, let alone gotten any other children out of his father. One loss is not another, her therapist said.

“The Garden Party”
Five on the Fifth (August 2017)
At his mother’s wedding party, a man has a revelation about his own marriage.

It was overcast, but they moved the chairs outside anyway. The invitation had promised a garden party—and they were determined to deliver. The rain had stopped; pale light slanted down, making the hedges glisten. They had been talking about the weather for what must have been hours. It was familiar to Jeremy and yet irritating, reminding him of all the reasons he’d left.
